Alabama Crew Club arrived in Clemson Friday, April 1st ready to row! Both crews, novice and varsity, were able to quickly unload the trailer and squeeze in a quick late afternoon practice before dinner.
After arriving at the race course early Saturday morning, for lightweight weigh in the Men’s Varsity 8+ launched for the first race of the morning. With top 3 advancing to finals Alabama sailed down the course into 3rd place at a graceful 31SPM (strokes per minute). As the winds increased the Men’s Open 2x launched. Novice, Duncan Springfield and Varsity Carlos Farias, placed 6th out of 7 in escalating winds completing their first sculling event of their rowing careers! As the weather continued to worsen the Men’s Varsity 4+s made their way up to the start line. Despite the conditions the V4 claimed bronze after finishing 3rd in their heat, and ultimately 3rd overall. The 2V4 put up a fight but fell short placing 4th in their heat. Unfortunately the novice and lightweight 4+ did not make it on the water before races were cancelled shortly after the Men’s Varsity 4+s returned the docks (which at this point were detaching and floating away in the strong winds). The Men’s Varsity 8+ ultimately finished 4th overall based on times from heats.
None the less, an impress showing in Alabama Crew’s first spring race of the season. Stayed tuned as Alabama Crew travels to Oak Ridge, TN to compete at SIRA.
